An object slides when it moves across a surface and is always touching the surface. A puck moves across the ice. The ice is a surface. The puck is always touching the ice as it moves.
Rolling
Kenji is playing with marbles. He shoots a marble across the floor. The floor is a surface. The marble moves across a surface. The marble is always touching the surface of the floor. Is the marble sliding?
The marble is not sliding. The marble is rolling. An object rolls when it turns around and around as it moves across a surface. An object that is sliding does not turn around and around as it moves.
Comparing Rolling and Sliding
A sliding object moves across a surface. A rolling object also moves across a surface.
A sliding object is always touching a surface. A rolling object is also always touching a surface.
A sliding object does not turn around and around as it moves. A rolling object turns around and around as it moves.
