Burrow
A burrow is a hole in the ground made by an animal for shelter.
Endangered
An animal is endangered when it is in danger of becoming extinct.
Extinct
An animal is extinct when it no longer exists anywhere in the world.
Some animals are extinct. This means these animals no longer exist anywhere in the world. Some animals are endangered. This means they are in danger of becoming extinct.
Burrowing Owls
Burrowing owls are the smallest owls in Canada. They live in burrows in the ground. These owls eat mice, grasshoppers, and beetles. They are endangered because they are losing their burrows. The burrows are destroyed when people build homes and businesses. Farming also destroys burrows.
Beluga Whales
Beluga whales live in the Arctic and the St. Lawrence River. They eat fish and other sea animals. They give birth to their young in the summer. They come into rivers to do this. They are endangered mostly because people hunted them for food. Today people limit hunting to protect the whales.
