Part C: Science Time
Today we’re going to learn how things that fly need air. The two big ideas are that air has pressure, and moving air creates differences in air pressure, which can be used to develop lift. You will…
• watch an episode of Bill Nye the Science Guy – Flight
• complete a reading comprehension activity – A Short History of Flight
• watch a video on how to make a paper airplane
Step 1: Before Video Discussion Starters
While watching the video, answer these questions…
• What makes things fly?
• What causes an airplane to lift up in space?
• What causes air pressure?
Step 2: Watch the Video

Step 3: Reading Comprehension Article
Once you have finished watching the video, it’s time to read a reading comprehension article on the history of flight and answer some questions. Have your child read the article to you, or take turns reading. To ensure understanding of the article, have them retell what they have read. Next, review the questions and encourage your child to go back to the article to support his or her answers. Don’t forget to write complete sentences for answers! No cutting corners!

Part D: Experiment – Make an Aircraft
Wow! You’re making great progress – you should be very proud of yourself 🙂
Next, onto building your very own aircraft after learning about the properties of flight. Gather the materials needed, then design and build an aircraft.
You’ve done such a great job today – next you get to go outside and try out your design. Think about what works well and how you may improve your design. Remember to maintain your “social distance” from others!
