Lesson 14 – Experiment: Loudness

Loudness

Sounds can be soft or loud. A sound will be louder when you are closer to the source. Sound will be softer when you are farther away. The loudness of a sound also depends on the size of the vibration. Large vibrations make loud sounds. Smaller vibrations make softer sounds. Try this experiment.

What You Need

  • 2 elastic bands the same size, one thick and one thin; large enough to stretch around a shoe box
  • A shoe box without a lid

What You Do

  1. Place the elastic bands around the box so they go over the opening. Leave some space between the two elastic bands.
  2. Pluck each elastic by lifting it up about 1 cm and letting go. Compare the sound made by each elastic. Answer questions 1 and 2 below.
  3. Lift one elastic band 1 cm, let go, and listen to the sound. Lift the same elastic band 2 cm, then 3 cm. Answer questions 3 and 4.
