Lesson 04 – Flying Through the Sky

Flying Through

the Sky

Vocabulary

Read the vocabulary terms to understand the reading better.

Tilt

Tilt means to move to a sloping or slanting position.

Hinged

Hinged means having a jointed or flexible device on which a door, lid, or flap can open and close.

Flaps

Flaps control surfaces on a rear airplane wing that can be positioned flat, up, or down, and are used to increase lift or drag.

Aerodynamics

Aerodynamics are the study of the movement of air and other gases, and the way solid objects, such as planes, are affected as they move through it.

Rudder

The rudder is a hinged piece of flat metal on the tail of a plane that moves left or right to help steer the plane.

A car zooming along a road can move in just two different ways. A car can drive to the left or right and it can move up and down a hill. A plane can also tilt and twirl. Pilots use hinged flaps to change the shape of the plane in the air. This changes the aerodynamics and moves the plane.

The pilot can tilt the plane’s nose up or down by tilting horizontal strips on the tail up or down.

Flaps on the wings tilt up and down to roll the plane.

A hinged rudder on the vertical tail makes the plane turn left or right.
