Part C: Story Time

Today, we’re going to…

   •  read aloud or watch a video about A Tale Of Two Beasts by Fiona Roberton

   •  draw and colour a forest

   •  compare the girl’s and the beast/s version of the story

   •  write about your own beast

Step 1: Before Reading Discussion Starters

Consider asking the following…

   •  What do you think the story will be about? 

   •  Have you ever seen an animal in the wild? Tell me about it.

Step 2: Read A Tale of Two Beasts by Fiona Roberton

If you have the book A Tale of Two Beasts read it aloud to your child.

For those of you who do not have the book, watch the following video.

Step 3: Post Reading Discussion Starters

   •  Who is telling the story? How do you know?

   •  Was A Tale of Two Beasts a good title for the story? Explain your thinking.

   •  In this book, the story is told twice from two different points of view. How are the two versions similar? How are the two versions different?

   •  Did you like the ending of the story? Tell why. 

   •  What do you think happened the next day after the story ended?

Step 4: Writing – Finding a Beast

Once you have finished watching the video, print the document located at the link below.  What beast would you want to find in the woods? Draw and write about the beast. Help your child work through the activity.

Step 5: Venn Diagram – Two Points of View

In this book, the story is told twice from two different points of view. How are the two versions similar? How are the two versions different? Complete the Venn Diagram comparing the girl’s version of the story, and the beast’s version of the story.

Consider displaying your child’s artwork on the fridge or another designated place as a way to congratulate your child for their effort and creativity!

Next, onto colouring! Print off the colouring document located at the link below. Colour in the forest and add the beasts that you might find there.
