Runway

A runway is where there is smooth ground along which aircraft take off and land.

What Is a Helicopter?

A helicopter is a flying machine. It uses blades to fly. The blades spin round and round very fast.


What Jobs Do Helicopters Do?

Helicopters do many different jobs.

Helicopters fly sick people to a hospital.

Helicopters move big, heavy objects.

Helicopters help put out forest fires. First they carry huge buckets of water to the fire. Then they dump the water on the fire.


How Are Helicopters and Airplanes Different?

An airplane has two large wings. Helicopters do not have wings. Most airplanes do not have blades that spin round and round. Helicopters have blades on top and at the back.

Airplanes can fly very fast. Helicopters cannot fly as fast as airplanes.

Airplanes take off on a road called a runway. First they go faster and faster. Then they slowly lift up into the air. Helicopters do not take off on a runway. They move straight up when they take off.
