Liquids That Don’t Mix

The Layered Look

If you pour water and grape juice into the same glass, they mix. Not all liquids will mix. Some liquids form layers. Some solid objects will float on these layers of liquids. Other objects will sink. Try this activity to find out more about floating and sinking.

What You Need

  • Tall clear jar
  • 125 mL corn syrup
  • 125 mL cooking oil
  • 125 mL water
  • Solid objects such as a cork, a small toy, a building block, a raisin, an ice cube

Tip: Dye the liquids with food colouring to more easily see the layers.

What You Do

  1. Pour the corn syrup into the jar.
  2. Carefully Pour the oil into the jar.
  3. Carefully pour the water into the jar.
  4. Carefully add the objects to the jar.
