Inclined Plane

An inclined plane can help move heavy objects. A ramp is an example of an inclined plane.

Lever

A lever can help move heavy objects such as heavy furniture or a large rock. When one side of a lever gets pushed down, the other side goes up. A seesaw is an example of a lever.

Pulley

A pulley is a simple machine that has a wheel over which a belt, rope, or chain is pulled to lift or lower an object. You can use a pulley to raise or lower blinds on a window.

Screw

A screw is an inclined plane twisted around a rod that can join, cut, lift, or push. A jar lid is an example of a screw.

Simple Machines

Simple machines make work easier and have few or no moving parts.

Wedge

A wedge is a simple machine that can push things apart by getting in between them. A saw is an example of a wedge. A wedge can also hold things together. A nail or doorstop are examples of a wedge that holds things together.

Wheel and Axle

A wheel and axle is a simple machine that can move objects across a distance. The wheel is the round part. The axle is the long part. A car has wheels and axles to help move.

Simple machines help you do work. They make work easier. Less push or pull is needed. There are six simple machines.
