The Rock Cycle
Did you know that Earth constantly recycles rock? Here is how this can happen:
Red hot magma inside Earth is pushed to the surface. (When magma flows out of a volcano, it is called lava.) The magma cools to form igneous rock.
Rocks on Earth’s surface are broken down into tiny pieces by wind and water. Over time, the sediment is carried to a lake or ocean. There, it settles in layers on the bottom. Eventually, the sediment becomes sedimentary rock.
Heat and pressure turns sedimentary rock into metamorphic rock. For example, when huge plates of Earth’s crust shift position, they produce a lot of heat. This melts the rock into magma.
