Lesson 11 – Animal Fliers

Animal Fliers

Vocabulary

Can you find where all the definitions are in the text?

Membrane

A membrane is thin flexible tissue that separates or connects regions, structures, or organs of a living organism.

Propel

Propel means to push or move something in a certain direction, often with a lot of force.

Gliders

Gliders are animals or birds with the ability to float on rising warm air currents or to travel by using wings without flapping them.

You have learned a lot about machines that fly. Many animals can fly too. Some have wings. Some have feathers. Others stretch skin into a wing shape.

Insects

Insects are amazing fliers because they can turn their wings. That lets them hover in the air or even fly backward. Spiders coast through the air on silky lines that catch the wind.

Bats

When you look at a bat’s wing. you may see long bony fingers with a thin skin or membrane stretched between them. Bats flap their spread-out fingers to fly.

Birds

Birds flap their wings to propel them through the air. They change the shape and angle of their wings to take off, steer, and land. Some birds are excellent gliders and barely flap their wings.
