A variable is a letter of the alphabet or symbol that represents a number we don’t know. It can represent any number.

A constant is a number and it does not change.

Stanley is x years old. x is a variable that represents Stanley’s age. x can represent any number.

Owen ate 6 cookies and Oliver ate n cookies. 6 is a constant because it represents 6 and does not change. n is a variable that represents the number of cookies Oliver ate.
