Topic: Whole Numbers B1.2 – Order Numbers From Least to Greatest Using Place Value

Ontario Curriculum Expectation:

5.B1.2 compare and order whole numbers up to and including 100 000, in various contexts.

You can order numbers from least to greatest using place value.

Order the numbers 56 340,  52 851,  57 694, and 54 137 from least to greatest.

1. Compare the numbers starting with the ten thousands column. Then, compare the thousands, hundreds,  tens, and the ones columns.

2. Write down the numbers in order from least to greatest.

The least number will have the lowest value in the ten thousands column (or the thousands column if the ten thousands are the same. If the thousands are the same, the hundreds will have the lowest value, then the tens if the hundreds are the same, and then the ones if the tens are the same.).
