Terms with the same variable are like terms.

6x  and 4x  are like terms. Both have x  in the term.

9a  and 9p  are not like terms.

Combining Like Terms

Simplify an algebraic expression by combining like terms.

To combine like terms, add or subtract the numbers of the like terms. The variables stay the same.
