Machines That Move Air
A machine is designed to do a job. Some machines do their jobs by making air move. How do they do that? They use fans.
A fan has parts called blades. When the blades turn, they make air move. The blades of a fan can be different shapes, and they can be made of metal, wood, or plastic.
A Fan Does Two Things
When a fan’s blades are turning, the fan creates pulling and pushing forces. On one side of the fan, the blades pull air into the fan. On the other side, the same blades push the air away from the fan. The faster the blades turn, the faster the fan makes air move.
Machines That Use Fans
Vacuum cleaners use the pulling force of a fan to do their job. When a vacuum cleaner pulls in air, the moving air carries dirt and dust inside the vacuum. We use moving air to help keep our homes clean.
People who don’t like raking leaves can use a leaf blower. A fan pushes air out of the leaf blower. The moving air pushes leaves. People use leaf blowers to push leaves into piles so it’s easier to put the leaves in bags.
In most homes, there is a fan above the stove. The purpose of the fan is to get rid of cooking smells. The bottom of the fan pulls in the air that contains cooking smells. The top of the fan pushes the air along a pipe that takes the air outside.
Some machines get warmer as they work. If they get too hot, they might stop working. Fans inside machines push out hot air and pull in cooler air. This keeps the machines from getting too hot, which is called overheating.
