Mass of Meteorites
Find out whether metal meteorites are heavier than stone meteorites of the same size.

What You Need
What You Do
What You Need
- A stone a little smaller than a golf ball
- 200 nickels
- 2 c (250 ml) measuring cup
- Warm water
- 2 small yogurt containers
- Scale
What You Do
- Put the stone in the measuring cup and pour in water up to the 1 c (250 ml) mark.
- Remove the stone without spilling any water. Place the stone in one of the yogurt containers.
- Record the level of the water in the measuring cup.
- Add nickels to the water until the level is back up to the 1 c (250 ml) mark. Now you have measured a volume of nickels equal to the stone.
- Carefully pour out the water and place the nickels in the other yogurt container. Now the two yogurt containers hold stone and metal with the same volumes.
- Hold a container in each hand. Which container feels heavier? Use a scale to weigh each container to find out. Record which container is heavier
