Read The Experiment
What State Is It In?
Shaving foam is made of soap, but it is not hard like a bar of soap or runny like liquid soap. Can we classify shaving foam as a solid, liquid, or gas? Try the experiment below.
- Paper towel
- Nickel
- Ruler
- Shaving foam (not shaving gel)
- Magnifying glass
- Place a blob of shaving foam on a piece of paper towel. Your blob of shaving foam should be roughly circular, about 4 to 5 cm in diameter, and about 3 cm high. Observe the shaving foam for a moment, then answer question 1.
- Gently lay the nickel flat on top of the shaving foam. Observe what happens and answer question 2. Then carefully remove the nickel.
- Look at the shaving foam through a magnifying glass. Answer question 3.
- Using your index finger, scoop up a little of the shaving foam. Rub it between your thumb and fingers and notice how it feels. Answer question 4.
- Put the shaving foam in a place where it will not be disturbed. Leave it for two or three days. Then observe any changes in how it looks and feels, and answer questions 5 and 6.
